The Southampton City Vision consultation has now closed. We will share results in the coming weeks and there will be further opportunity to give us your views later in the year.

Southampton City Council are committed to delivering distinctive buildings of a high quality design and public spaces that people want to spend time in. The place shaping element of the City Vision is critical to linking the other themes together and setting out our plans for creating spaces/environments that work for residents and businesses both practically and aesthetically.

Public art is a great way to improve the quality of a place and add distinctiveness and interest for users. We currently require public art to be included in significant development proposals within the city for these reasons but would love to know what type of public art you would like to see around Southampton. You can tell us by posting on the ideas board below. (e.g. sculpture, green art, graffiti, interactive installations, water features, wall art)

New buildings also have a significant impact on their surroundings. We want to ensure that with high quality design requirements we enable distinctive landmark and taller buildings to be delivered in the right places across the city. Tell us what you think by answering the questions below.

  • Share I moved from Wolverhampton to Southampton in 1999 and love living in this city. We have see tremendous positive changes such as West Quay, Watermark West Quay, Guildhall Square etc. The one area we need to develop as a main attraction is our city waterfront. The current idea of the Spitfire monument is okay but what experience are we bringing to the city. Portsmouth has spinnaker tower and a better idea would have been to make the Spitfire monument a true 'high altitude' visual experience to beat Spinnaker tower, for all the UK to get wonderful Southampton aerial views from and learn about the Spitfire role, interactive virtual simulator for children etc. This would have been a true landmark to put SOuthampton on the map and bring in significant tourism revenue and make us all proud to be in Southampton on Facebook Share I moved from Wolverhampton to Southampton in 1999 and love living in this city. Thank you for your comments. We are aware of the desire of residents to have greater access to the waterfront, and this will be considered as we develop the plan.

  • Share We should seriously consider opening up the shopping precinct at the entrance to West Quay and allow access to the parks (similar to what has been done at Guildhall Square). This would require demolishing Holland and Barratt or Sports Direct, but would encourage movement of people directly though the the parks. As things stand, visitors probably don;t even know that Houndwell Park exists. Better still, redevelop the entire block, same as we did to Tyrell and Green!! on Facebook Share We should seriously consider opening up the shopping precinct at the entrance to West Quay and allow access to the parks (similar to what has been done at Guildhall Square). Thank you for your suggestions, we are currently discussing options for increasing and enhancing linkages across the whole of the city centre and to provide better accessibility to key areas including West Quay, Above Bar Street, Guildhall Square and our wonderful city centre parks. In doing so, we will take this suggestion into consideration. Thank you again

  • Share Are there any plans to reintroduce public conveniences in the city. Over the last fifty years Southampton city centre seen the closure of six toilets from the city and with the city bidding for culture status where are visitors meant to go when the need arises. on Facebook Share Are there any plans to reintroduce public conveniences in the city.
